Texas Government should take action in banning texting while driving
Is it really important to stay connected to your device during
every minute of the day? Many accidents occur nowadays are blamed on distracted
driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. Texting or
using a cell phone while driving is very dangerous to oneself and other people.
The common reason the majority of people disapprove texting while driving
because it causes a great amount of accidents per year. There are many laws
being established to prevent this problem, but it has not gone down either. In
Texas, texting while driving is consider to be illegal in school zone only.
However, Texas government should expand the banning of texting beside school
zone.
According to a Dallas article, on
February 2013, Governor Rick Perry vetoed a statewide ban on texting while
driving (dallasnews.com). He reasoned that since all drivers have gone through
the course where they learn about safety, it is unnecessary to do a statewide
ban. Instead, each person should responsible for their own act and be mature
about texting. There is a study released by the Highway Loss Data Institute
saying that banning texting while driving did not result in fewer crashes. In
my opinion, the important point to focus on is not only banning texting but
actually making it happen. There’re many ways in which the government can
actually ban texting not only by putting it as a law on paper. The government
could use the advantage of technology and create a program where all cell
phones would automatically turn off after the driver turn on the engine.
Another way is to raise public awareness about the dangerous of texting through
public presentations. “If the state is not willing to say whether it’s right or
wrong [and] if the government can’t involved in public safety, then what
government is there for” (dallasnews.com)
